What difference does insulation make?

Fuel prices are rocketing. Paying to stay warm and healthy is becoming a very real worry for many families. The energy providers are telling us that the days of what they are calling "cheap fuel" are over. This isn't a blip - fuel prices are going up and they're not coming back down. They may come down a little from time to time but the overall trend is up.

Alongside rising fuel costs we're faced with two major world-wide problems. Firstly, we're running out of traditional fuels - this maybe won't be felt during our lifetime but we need to make sure that we don't leave a horrible legacy for the future. Secondly, we're hurting the planet - the experts are telling us that if we don't reduce harmful emissions the planet will be unrecognisable in the not-too-distant future.

A properly insulated home will use much less energy than an uninsulated one. According to The Energy Saving Trust, insulating the wall cavities in your home can save around £160 per year. Again according to EST, insulating an uninsulated loft can save around £205 per year and around 1 tonne of CO2. That's every year - so if you spend £200 on loft insulation in a typical uninsulated loft, it will have paid for itself after the first year and will save you around £205 every year from then on and even more as fuel prices rise. That's got to make sense.
