Cavity Wall Insulation

CAVITY WALL INSULATION

Un-insulated cavity walls cost you money. Up to 33 per cent of the heat produced in your home is lost through the walls.

The good news is that cavity wall insulation is quick, clean and relatively inexpensive and it could save you £100-120 a year on your fuel bills.

It will create an even temperature in your home, help prevent condensation on the walls and ceilings and can also reduce the amount of heat building up inside your home during summer hot spells.

"The proof of the success of cavity wall insulation is the large number of householders who enjoy its trouble-free benefits. Five million homes already have cavity wall insulation".

What is cavity wall insulation?

Cavity wall insulation is blown into the cavity between the inner and outer leaves of brickwork that make up the external wall of your property. We do this from the outside of your property. By combining with the still captive air, the insulation acts as a barrier to heat loss.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How do I know if I have cavity walls?

A: First of all, check the age of your house. In most houses built after the 1920s, the external walls are made of two layers with a small air gap or 'cavity' between them.

Also, check the thickness of the walls by any entrance door or window. Cavity walls are at least 26.5cm (10.5 inches) thick.

Looking at the brick pattern of your outside walls can also help to identify cavity walls, as this will usually differ from solid walls

Q: How long will it take?

A: Between two to three hours for a three bedroom semi-detached house.

Q: Will it make a mess?

A: No. The insulation is blown from the outside, so the installers will not be working in the house.

Q: What is used as insulation?

A: We use the Instafibre system. The insulation is granulated glass wool fibres treated with an inert water repellant. It is properly accredited by the British Board of Agrement as a building material and we are a certified installation contractor.

Q: Will the work be guaranteed?

A: The work is guaranteed for 25 years by the Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency (CIGA).

Q: How much will it cost?

A: Government support means that many households will have CWI installed free. For households who don't qualify for support, an average house can be cavity insulated for around £200. If you live in West Dunbartonshire, LESS will reduce this price even further. Click here to view LESS prices

Q: How is it installed?

A: Getting your walls insulated couldn't be easier. It is normally applied from the outside through small holes, roughly the size of a 10p coin, drilled in the wall by trained technicians. The material is then blown through the holes, filling the cavity. The holes are then filled in to make as perfect a match as possible with the existing wall.

It's a simple process and is normally completed within three hours, without damage or mess to your home or garden.
