An under-insulated loft costs you money. Up to 20 per cent of the heat produced in your home is lost through the roof.
Installing loft insulation to the recommended depth (270mm - 300mm) is quick, clean, inexpensive and according to The Energy Saving Trust could save you up to £155 a year in fuel bills.
Your home will be warmer and you'll be able to turn down your heating. You'll also be helping in the fight against global warming by saving up to 1 tonne of CO2 per year.
What is loft insulation?
Lofts are normally insulated by laying material on the floor of the loft. This material is chosen for its insulation properties and is normally a mineral wool quilt. Solas uses "Superglass" fibreglass quilt manufactured in Stirling. This acts as a blanket and stops the heat from the floor below escaping through the roof.
Frequently asked questions
Q: How long will it take?
A: For an average house between 1 and 2 hours.
Q: Will it make a mess?
A: No. All the material is carried into the loft in bags and any excess is wrapped before it is removed. Other than feeling warmer, you won't know we've been in your home.
Q: Do I have to clear my loft?
A: In many cases no. When our surveyor visits you, he or she will advise you if you need to clear your loft. If clearing your loft is a problem, we can arrange to do this for you - in many cases this is free but we may have to make a small charge for this service. If we clear your loft, we will, of course, put the items back.
Q: Can I store things in my loft after you've finished?
A: Yes. The main difference will be that you may not be able to see the joists which may be covered with insulation. If you take the same care as before and only use the joists to walk on or rest items then there won't be a problem.
Q: How much will it cost?
A: As with cavity wall insulation, government support means that many households will have LI installed free. For households who don't qualify for support, an average loft can be fitted with loft insulation for £150 - £250. If you live in West Dunbartonshire, LESS will reduce this price even more.
